With deep sorrow, we announce that on July 28, 2026, at the age of 90, the outstanding scientist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, professor, director of the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of the NAS of Ukraine (1995-2026), and head of the Cybernetics Center of the NAS of Ukraine, Ivan Vasylovych Serhiienko, passed away.
Ivan Vasylovych was the permanent director of the Institute of Cybernetics—having headed the institution since 1995, he led the Institute for over three decades during difficult times. His organizational genius allowed the Cybernetics Center to be preserved and ensured Ukraine’s technological sovereignty.
Ivan Vasylovych’s contribution to science and state-building was recognized with the highest titles and awards: Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, honorary academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine, honorary professor of many universities. A full set of the highest honors—four State Prizes of Ukraine in science and technology, the USSR State Prize, the USSR Council of Ministers Prize, and the State Prize of Ukraine in education. Full holder of the Order "For Merit" of I, II, and III degrees, as well as the Order of Friendship of Peoples. Laureate of named prizes of academicians V.M. Glushkov, S.O. Lebedev, V.S. Mykhalevych, and A.O. Dorodnitsyn.
We deeply mourn this irreparable loss. We express our sincerest, deepest condolences to the family and close ones of Ivan Vasylovych. We share the pain of this loss with his numerous students, colleagues, and employees of the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of the NAS of Ukraine and the entire Cybernetics Center.
The bright memory of the Great Scientist, a Man with a huge heart and unwavering statehood position, will forever remain in our hearts. His intellectual legacy will continue to serve Ukraine. Eternal memory!
